What are we all about?

Our story

Huntington Coach has a rich history stretching back to 1927. Throughout its 90-plus years of providing reliable student transportation, it has grown into one of the largest providers on Long Island.

In 1927, Huntington Coach is formed – In 1927, the company was founded by the Dempsey family of Huntington. The company transported workers to local factories during World War II.

During the 1950s, Huntington Coach enters the school bus transportation industry – In 1950, Ernest Schenk, who operated a large transit company in Floral Park, purchased the company. In 1955, Schenk sold Huntington Coach and Hendrickson Bus to James Clifford and his wife, Dorothy.

Huntington Coach grows its fleet – In 1965, Kevin Clifford became president of Huntington Coach and Hendrickson Bus. The fleet has since grown from under 100 vehicles in 1965 to over 900 that the companies operate today.

Teaching School Bus Safety with Buster the Bus

At Huntington Coach, we believe school bus safety starts with both trained drivers and well-informed students. That’s why we bring Buster — the remote-controlled, talking mini school bus — into classrooms to teach safety skills in a fun, engaging way.

Our program focuses on kindergarten through third grade, the ages most at risk for bus-related injuries. In kindergarten, students meet Buster in class, then head outside to explore a real bus and learn vital lessons: stay visible, keep a safe distance, and always follow the driver’s signals.

Older students review key safety points through an auditorium presentation and video. Each kindergartener receives a take-home kit with a coloring book, safety info for parents, and a reminder of what they’ve learned.

Offered free to our district partners, this program helps meet New York state school bus safety requirements — while keeping kids informed, engaged, and safe.
